A “bargain” from the Netherlands — when cheap does not fit
“Bargain. That word often appears while a dealer browses eight or ten sites for stock.
Once a candidate appears, the numbers start. The surprise comes when the listing was only half-read — or the foreign seller’s terms are not what you assumed.
January 2026: a Kia, then an Opel
A dealer picked a Kia Ceed estate in the Netherlands — popular, seemingly “fits.” Contact was smooth. Deposit and VIN arrived on WhatsApp almost too easily.
Then travel and a personal inspection. Good dealers know: nothing beats seeing the car.
Then the black soup. The car looked fine — within about two kilometres it caught fire. Extinguish, back to the seller. The seller would not accept the situation; repair was promised for the next day.
Extra costs hit the planned purchase:
lodging: €150
first fill-up after handover: €50
dinner while waiting: €75
The Kia would have started at €4,500 — plus those extras. Next day the car was not repairable. On the spot, another choice from the lot: an Opel at €6,000.
That alone moved the plan by roughly €2,000. Back home, the ~HUF 100,000 prep buffer planned for the Kia became ~HUF 280,000 in repair — the chosen car had essentially no service history. In the rush, history checks were skipped.
Planned profit near HUF 1,000,000 became about HUF 150,000. Travel and waiting time were not even counted.
The lesson is not “bad luck”
The listing price alone does not say whether a deal fits your room to act. You need reserve for surprise. Time for history. A full cost line — before haste decides for you.
