A different tempo — not the classic startup script
The startup world is harsh. Good ideas vanish when attention goes to the wrong scoreboard.
There is more data than ever to build correctly.” Much of it comes dressed as economic science: frameworks, funnels, round milestones. The idea can slip into the background. If you want another path, you have to do something differently on purpose.
Wright and Langley two kinds of “data”
Long ago many people believed flight was impossible. Some experimented lightly. Some took it seriously.
One path had capital, institutional methods, large public support, and money at the centre (Langley). Another path — the Wright brothers — moved with persistence and the curiosity of bicycle mechanics. They did not wait for a finished theory. They used the data of experience: try, learn, try again.
Today aviation science sits on what they demonstrated. The difference was not “data versus no data.” It was what counted as data: lived experience versus pre-written equations.
AI startups face a similar fork
When people talk about AI companies, some initiatives prefer the written playbook: traditional VC architecture, metrics-first theatre, the company shaped to fit the spreadsheet.
Others do not.
It is easy to assume the second path is weaker. The Wright example suggests otherwise: if the “data” is experience — product in the hands of real users, learning in the field — you are not automatically behind. You may be building a different possibility set.
The path we are on
CarVinsight walks that second path.
We do not follow the classic script as an obligation: pitch → round → narrative → then maybe the hard foundation. We are building decision-support software for used-car dealers — live product, dealer pilot in progress — with a serious data layer under active build, and AI treated as something that sits on real structure, not on empty slides.
That is not anti-growth. It is anti-pretence.
We will not claim “first in the world.” We will not invent depth. Public voice stays careful. Progress is the work itself: calmer decision prep for dealers — search, cost, value, stock — with pricing and profit staying with the dealer.
Soft next step
If you care how software companies are built, look at sequence, not slogans. Foundation before theatre. Experience before costume.
